Context

The love story between Sarajevo and Barcelona dates back to 1993, when humanitarian convoys were dispatched to besieged Sarajevo. In 1995, Distrito XI, a programme that established and channelled hundreds of initiatives during the reconstruction period, embarked on its adventure.

This tale of brotherhood was built by real people who started managing projects and many of whom ended up absorbed by the unique and magical capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city of Sarajevo was the 11th District of Barcelona.

Despite there being no geographical connection between their districts, the emotional bridge between the two Olympic cities started to solidify and, little by little, it became indestructible. No other city in the world was as strongly and genuinely involved in the fight against injustice as Barcelona.

What does medicusmundi mediterrània do in bosnia and herzegovina?

medicusmundi has been working in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) since 2018 to improve women’s rights, including the right to live in a safe environment free of violence. We collaborate with civil society organisations, such as the Foundation of Local Democracy (FLD) and the BiH Journalists Association, in projects involving victim care, job creation, political advocacy, prevention and internationalisation of the fight against gender violence.

Beyond this, we celebrate the mestizo soul of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina in general and are committed to its recognition and integration in a diverse and plural continent.
